Male and female differ in the degree of the darkened scent scales around body
Inhabits woodland margins and, as the name implies, it could originally be found around field gates. Although affected by modern agriculture, this butterfly now inhabits marginal areas of non agricultural significance, such as rough parkland, allotments, large gardens, and other areas set aside for recreation and nature.
Single brooded - can be seen on the wing from mid Summer onwards
Larval Foodplant: grasses
Status: abundant - stable, not under threat. Seen in all areas
